This tiny Valentine's Day amigurumi cat turns a bright pink kitten into a palm-sized crochet keepsake with a sweet heart-shaped tail. The design is inspired by the visible silhouette and color placement of the reference image: a rounded cat head with pointed ears, a compact cylindrical body, glossy dark eyes, pale embroidered facial details, a soft pink neck bow, and a long tail curved into a heart. Because a photograph cannot reveal hidden stitch counts or construction, the instructions below use an original, internally consistent miniature construction sized for a keychain or small gift.

The pattern is friendly for a confident beginner who is comfortable with single crochet in continuous rounds. You will use basic increases and invisible decreases, make two small flat ears, embroider a simple nose and lashes, and shape a narrow crocheted tail with a few hidden anchoring stitches. The finished kitten is approximately 7.5 cm (3 in) tall, small enough to rest naturally in one adult hand.

A palm-sized finished view of the bright pink Valentine cat, with its soft bow and heart-shaped tail clearly visible.

Materials

Materials

  • Sport or light DK yarn in bright raspberry pink, approximately 15-20 g
  • Small amount of pale pink yarn or embroidery floss for the nose
  • Small amount of white embroidery floss for the eyelashes
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook
  • Two 6 mm black safety eyes
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins for assembly
  • Approximately 20 cm of 6-8 mm pale pink satin ribbon for the neck bow
  • Optional 10-12 mm split ring or lobster clasp for keychain use

Use a hook that gives a dense fabric with no visible stuffing. If your yarn is thicker than light DK, reduce yarn size rather than enlarging the project.

Before You Begin

Work the head, body, and tail in continuous spirals unless a row is specifically marked as turned. Move a stitch marker to the first stitch of every round so the shaping stays centered. Amigurumi fabric should be firm: if you can easily see daylight between stitches, go down 0.25 mm in hook size.

Add stuffing in small pinches rather than one large clump. This keeps the miniature shape smooth and prevents the fibers from stretching the stitches. Insert the safety eyes while the head opening is still large enough to reach inside, and lock the washers only after checking that both eyes are level. Keep the ears and tail lightly structured rather than overstuffed, because the reference design has crisp pointed ears and a slim heart outline.

Before sewing, place the head on the stuffed body and pin every separate piece. View the cat from the front, side, and back. Small placement differences are very noticeable on a 7.5 cm project.

After Round 10, insert the 6 mm safety eyes between Rounds 8 and 9 with about 7 stitches between the posts. Check the spacing from the front center line before attaching the washers. Embroider the pale pink nose between Rounds 9 and 10, centered between the eyes: make 3-4 short horizontal stitches over about 2 stitches, then add one small vertical stitch downward. Add two tiny white eyelash stitches just outside each eye. Begin firm but flexible stuffing after Round 11, adding the final small pinch before Round 14. Cut the yarn, thread through the remaining front loops, pull closed, and secure.

Step 2 - Body

The body is a compact cylinder with a slightly rounded base, matching the narrow torso visible in the reference.

Stuff the lower half firmly enough that the base stays rounded and the kitten can sit upright, then use less stuffing near the neck so the head can be sewn on without a bulky ridge. Close the final 6 stitches as for the head. Leave a long tail if you prefer to use the body yarn to sew the head in place.

Step 3 - Ears

Make 2. These are tiny flat triangles sewn to the top of the head.

Row 1: ch 4, sc in the second ch from hook and in the next 2 ch (3)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in first st, dec over last 2 sts (2)

Row 3: ch 1, turn, dec (1)

FO, leaving a 12 cm tail for sewing. Do not stuff. Gently stretch each ear into a neat triangle with the point at Row 3.

Step 4 - Heart-Shaped Tail

Use raspberry pink yarn. The tail is a narrow flexible tube that is shaped and stitched into a heart outline after crocheting.

Rounds 2-36:

(6 each round)

FO with a long sewing tail. Do not pack the tube firmly. If the center feels completely hollow, use only tiny wisps of fiberfill every few rounds; the tail must remain flexible. Curve the tube into a heart, pinch the top indentation, and use matching yarn to take 2-3 hidden stitches where the upper curves touch. Add one more hidden stitch near the lower point if needed. This holds the heart without wire and keeps the finished project soft. Valentine's Day amigurumi cat. Crochet pattern. crochet tutorial step 2

Top-left: the light DK pink yarn, pale accent yarn, 6 mm eyes, 2.25 mm hook, needle, and ribbon. Top-right: the head after shaping, eye placement, facial embroidery, and ear attachment. Bottom-left: the stuffed body after Round 14. Bottom-right: the 6-stitch tail tube after Round 36, curved and secured into its heart shape.

Step 5 - Assembly

Pin the head centered on top of the body. The bottom of the head should rest just over the body opening without covering more than the uppermost body round. Sew around the neck with small whip stitches, taking one stitch from the head and one from the body each time. Pull firmly enough to close the seam, but do not cinch so hard that the neck puckers.

Position the ears on the top sides of the head, approximately over Rounds 3-5 when counted down from the crown. Leave about 6-7 stitches of visible crown between the inner ear edges. Pin both ears before sewing, then attach through the bottom row of each triangle. The points should lean slightly outward rather than straight up.

Place the base of the heart tail at the lower back of the body, around Rounds 4-6. Sew the first 1 cm of the tube securely to the body so the heart rises beside the kitten. Arrange the heart to sit to one side, echoing the reference silhouette, then add one discreet anchoring stitch where the lower heart curve touches the body. Hide all yarn tails inside the stuffed pieces.

Tie the pale pink satin ribbon around the neck and make a small bow slightly off-center toward the kitten's right side. Trim the ends diagonally so they do not cover the body. For an optional keychain, sew a strong yarn loop through several stitches at the crown between the ears, then attach a split ring or lobster clasp. Tug-test the attachment before use. Top-left: check the head shape, eye spacing, nose, lashes, and ear symmetry before joining. Top-right: the body should be evenly stuffed but slightly softer at the neck. Bottom-left: shape the tail into a clear heart and secure the curves with hidden stitches. Bottom-right: after the head is sewn on, tie the narrow satin ribbon close to the neck seam so the bow sits neatly against the body.

Finishing Touches

Roll the finished head and body gently between your palms to distribute the stuffing and smooth any small lumps. Check that the eyes form a level line and that the nose sits midway between them. If one ear appears lower, a tiny additional stitch at its outer corner can correct the angle. For the soft expression shown in the reference, keep the white lashes short and delicate rather than making them thick.

Trim and hide every yarn tail inside the project. If you want blush, touch a tiny amount of dry pink fabric-safe blush below the eyes with a cotton swab; keep it subtle so it does not overpower the bright yarn. The ribbon bow may be secured with one hidden sewing stitch through the knot if the cat will be used as a keychain.

Customization Ideas

🎨
Soft Valentine Palette

Replace raspberry with dusty rose, blush, or cream while keeping the pale pink bow and nose for a gentler romantic version.

🧶
Tweed or Speckled Yarn

Choose a fine yarn with tiny colored flecks to recreate the lively handmade texture visible in the reference without changing the stitch counts.

🪡
Embroidered Eyes

Substitute small satin-stitch eyes for the safety eyes when making the project for a young child or whenever removable plastic parts are undesirable.

💗
Mini Collar Charm

Add one tiny felt heart or lightweight charm at the ribbon knot, keeping the accessory proportionate to the 7.5 cm miniature scale.

🔑
Keychain Version

Add a secure crown loop and split ring so the cat can be clipped to a bag, pencil case, or key set.

Troubleshooting

⚠️
Problem

Stuffing shows through the stitches

Possible cause: The crochet tension is too loose or the piece is overstuffed

✓
How to fix
Use a slightly smaller hook and add fiberfill in small pinches, stopping as soon as the shape feels supported.
⚠️
Problem

The head looks too large for the body

Possible cause: The head was stuffed very firmly while the body was underfilled

✓
How to fix
Redistribute stuffing before final assembly. The head should stay rounded, while the body needs enough fill to balance its visual weight.
⚠️
Problem

The heart tail will not keep its shape

Possible cause: The tail tube is too firmly stuffed or the curves are not anchored

✓
How to fix
Remove excess stuffing if possible and add two or three hidden stitches at the heart indentation and lower point.
⚠️
Problem

The ears look uneven

Possible cause: The triangular pieces were sewn at different heights or angles

✓
How to fix
Pin both ears first, count the head rounds from the crown, and compare the front view before completing the seam.

Care Instructions

🫧

Spot Cleaning & Hand Washing

Spot clean whenever possible. For deeper cleaning, hand wash gently in cool water with mild detergent and avoid soaking the satin bow for long periods.

💨

Drying & Reshaping

Press moisture out in a clean towel without wringing, reshape the head, ears, and heart tail while damp, and air dry flat.

☀️

Storage & Sunlight

Store away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade strong pink yarn, and avoid crushing the heart tail under heavier objects.

🛡️

Safety & Durability

Inspect the neck seam, tail attachment, bow, and any keychain hardware regularly. For children under 3, use embroidered eyes instead of safety eyes.
