This tiny snowman packs the cozy character of a full plush into a palm-sized winter charm. The design keeps the reference look - a fluffy white snowman, warm tan ushanka, bright turquoise eyes, orange carrot nose, red mittens, and a candy-cane scarf - while translating it into an approximately 8 cm amigurumi that can sit naturally in one adult hand.

This free ushanka snowman amigurumi crochet pattern is best for a confident beginner who is comfortable working small continuous rounds. You will use a magic ring, single crochet increases and invisible decreases, simple color changes, tiny flat pieces, sewing, and light facial embroidery. Because a photograph cannot reveal hidden stitch counts, the construction below is an original, internally consistent miniature adaptation rather than a recovered source pattern.

The finished miniature snowman keeps the rounded white body, oversized expressive face, tan ear-flap hat, red accent, carrot nose, mittens, and striped scarf in a keychain-scale design.

Before You Begin

Work the head, body, arms, legs, and nose in continuous spirals unless a row is specifically stated. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and count every round before moving the marker. Fine chenille can hide stitch tops, so feel for both loops rather than relying only on sight.

Stuff with small teased wisps instead of large clumps. The goal is a smooth, rounded shape without stretching the fabric. Insert the safety eyes while the head opening is still large enough to reach the washers. For clean color changes on the arms, complete the final pull-through of the last red stitch with white yarn.

The stated 8 cm size assumes fine chenille or DK yarn with a 2.25 mm hook. Thicker plush yarn will quickly push the snowman beyond the required miniature scale.

Step 1 - Body

With white yarn, begin at the base. The lower rounds form a small flat circle, then the straight rounds build the rounded belly.

Round 10:

Stuff firmly after Round 8, concentrating a little extra fiberfill in the lower half so the snowman sits upright. Add the final small pinch before Round 10 becomes too tight. FO, close the remaining six stitches through the front loops, and hide the tail inside.

Top-left: keep the white working yarn tensioned against the hand as the body fabric is supported. Top-right: position the hook at the next stitch with the working strand feeding continuously to the hook. Bottom-left: maintain the same hook direction while drawing yarn through the active stitch. Bottom-right: continue single crochet with one active loop on the hook and the miniature body supported without stretching the chenille.

Step 2 - Head

The head is intentionally larger than the belly to preserve the expressive proportions of the reference. Start with white yarn.

Before Round 9, insert the 6 mm eyes between Rounds 6 and 7, about 5 stitches apart. Center them around the front marker before locking the washers. Stuff the head evenly, keeping the cheeks rounded rather than hard. After Round 11, close the opening and leave a long tail for sewing to the body.

Top-left: the unadorned white head-and-body shapes show the intended snowman proportions. Top-right: check the smooth rounded shaping before facial details are added. Bottom-left: place the turquoise eyes and orange nose symmetrically while the head is accessible. Bottom-right: test the ushanka on the finished head before permanent sewing.

Step 3 - Arms and Legs

Arms - Make 2

Start each arm with red yarn for the mitten.

Ear Flaps - Make 2

Row 1: ch 5, sc in second ch from hook and across (4). Rows 2-3: ch 1, turn, sc across (4). Row 4: ch 1, turn, dec, 2 sc (3). Row 5: ch 1, turn, dec, sc (2). FO with a sewing tail.

Front Folded Flap

Row 1: ch 9, sc in second ch from hook and across (8). Rows 2-3: ch 1, turn, 8 sc (8). FO.

Tiny Red Bow Accent

Make an MR. Work (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, sl st in MR) twice. Tighten the ring and FO. Wrap the tail once around the center to define the bow.

Twisted Red-and-White Scarf

Make one red chain of 42 ch and one white chain of 42 ch. Hold the chains together, twist them gently into a candy-cane spiral, and tack the two cords together with tiny matching stitches in four places. Knot the paired ends securely and trim them evenly.

Ushanka Snowman Amigurumi Crochet Pattern (Free) crochet tutorial step 4

Top-left: the tan crown, front flap, ear flaps, and red accent form the ushanka. Top-right: the twisted red-and-white scarf sits beside two matching red mitten ends. Bottom-left: pin the two arms at equal height before sewing. Bottom-right: wrap the scarf once around the neck and secure the crossing point with a small hidden stitch.

Step 5 - Assembly

Pin the head to the top center of the body, matching the head opening to the closed top of the belly. Sew around the join with small whip stitches, checking from the front after every few stitches so the face stays centered.

Sew the legs to the underside of the body around Body Rounds 2-4, placing them close together so the snowman can sit. Attach the arms at approximately Body Rounds 5-7, angled slightly forward. Sew the orange nose between Head Rounds 7 and 8, centered between the eyes.

Place the tan crown over the top third of the head. Sew the crown edge lightly around Head Rounds 3-4 so it stays removable-looking rather than flattened. Position the ear flaps at the sides, with their wider edges attached to the lower hat edge and narrow tips hanging beside the cheeks. Sew only the top edge of the front flap to the front of the crown so the lower edge can lift slightly. Attach the red bow accent to the front-left side.

Wrap the scarf once around the neck and let both ends fall toward the front-right side. Tack it invisibly at the back of the neck so it cannot slip over the face.

Finishing Touches

Use two short strands of black embroidery floss to add a shallow curved smile one round below the nose. Add one or two tiny lash stitches at the outer corner of each eye to echo the expressive reference without overcrowding the face. Massage the head and belly between your palms to distribute stuffing, then check that both arms and legs sit symmetrically.

Weave all remaining tails deeply into the stuffed pieces before trimming. Optional blush can be added very lightly beneath the eyes with fabric-safe powder. For a keychain, stitch a reinforced tan ch-10 loop through the crown and through several head stitches, then attach a split ring; the hardware should pull against the crocheted head, not only the hat flap.

Customization Ideas

🎨
Classic Winter Palette

Replace bright red with burgundy or forest green while keeping the white body and tan hat for a quieter winter look.

🧢
Different Ushanka

Make the crown charcoal, cream, or dusty blue and use a contrasting bow accent to personalize the hat.

🧣
Scarf Variations

Use two solid chain cords, three colors, or a single narrow crocheted strip if you prefer a less twisted scarf.

🪡
Embroidered Eyes

Replace safety eyes with black embroidered sleepy eyes when making the snowman for a young child.

🔑
Bag Charm

Add a small lobster clasp to the reinforced crown loop for a backpack or zipper charm while keeping the toy itself under 9 cm.

Troubleshooting

⚠️
Problem

Stuffing shows through the white stitches

Possible cause: The hook is too large, tension is loose, or the piece is overstuffed

✓
How to fix
Move down one hook size and add fiberfill in small wisps rather than stretching the fabric.
⚠️
Problem

The snowman tips forward

Possible cause: The head is overstuffed or the legs are attached too far toward the front

✓
How to fix
Remove a little head stuffing if possible and pin the legs farther underneath the body before resewing.
⚠️
Problem

The ushanka slides over the eyes

Possible cause: The crown is too deep or was sewn below the intended head rounds

✓
How to fix
Fold the crown upward slightly and resew its edge around Head Rounds 3-4, then secure the front flap separately.
⚠️
Problem

The eyes look uneven

Possible cause: The posts were placed without checking the center line

✓
How to fix
Mark the nose center first and count equal stitch spacing to each eye before snapping on the washers.

Care Instructions

🫧

Spot Cleaning & Hand Washing

Spot clean whenever possible. For a deeper clean, hand wash gently in cool water with a small amount of mild detergent.

💨

Drying & Reshaping

Press moisture out in a clean towel without wringing, reshape the hat and body with your fingers, and air dry flat.

☀️

Storage & Sunlight

Store dry and away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade the red and tan yarns.

🛡️

Safety & Durability

Check the keychain loop and sewn joins regularly. Use embroidered eyes instead of safety eyes for children under 3.
