Little Onion Crochet Pattern

This charming little onion is a delightful project for crocheters of all levels! Its simple construction and adorable design make it a perfect addition to a collection, a unique gift, or a whimsical decoration.

This pattern will guide you through creating a finished onion with delicate roots and vibrant green leaves. The finished size is approximately 2 inches tall. This project consists of the body and leaves.

This pattern is suitable for beginners and uses basic crochet techniques. You’ll need to know how to make a magic ring, single crochet (sc), increase (inc), and slip stitch (sl st). This pattern uses US crochet terminology.

What You'll Need

New to crochet terms? Check our Complete Abbreviations Guide

  • White yarn (any suitable yarn – cotton/acrylic) – I used “Detksaya Novinka”

  • Beige yarn (or light green)

  • Green yarn

  • White thin yarn (any thin cotton, like Coco Vita or “Iris”)

  • 1.75 mm crochet hook

  • Yarn needle

  • Scissors

  • Stitch marker

  • Polyfill stuffing (optional)

  • PVA glue (optional, for shaping leaves)

Finished size is approximately 2 inches tall. Gauge is not critical for this project.

Pattern Instructions

Phase 1: The Body (White)

6 SC in magic ring INC in each st around 12 SC around 12 SC around 12 SC around

At this stage, we’ll create the roots. Secure the thin yarn with small knots (you can add the roots later on the finished onion, but I prefer when they “grow” from the inside). Orient towards the center (from the 6 SC). Cut off excess yarn – the roots are ready.

(2 SC, DEC) repeat 3 times 9 SC around (SC, DEC) repeat 3 times 6 SC around – finish the last SC with beige (or light green) yarn.

Phase 2: The Top (Beige/Light Green)

6 SC around 6 SC around 6 SC around – finish the last SC with green yarn (we will create the leaves).

Phase 3: The Leaves (Green)

Chain 18, (from the second chain from the hook) 3 sl st, then work a row of SC to the end of the row, sl st into the next stitch of the base. Chain 23, work 2-3 sl st, then a row of SC, then chain 10, sl st, row of SC… You will get 6 leaves.

You can create leaves of different lengths and thicknesses (for example, work a row of sl st along the entire chain instead of SC). Experiment!

To prevent the leaves from curling, it’s best to use cotton or use PVA glue to shape them.

Assembly and finishing:

  • Stuff the onion lightly with polyfill stuffing (optional).

  • Sew the leaves onto the top of the onion.

  • Weave in all ends.
