A mint-green baby dragon in a floppy moon-and-stars hat makes a tiny companion for a shelf, gift topper, or carefully displayed bag charm. This magical version keeps the reference’s round head, cream muzzle and belly, rosy cheeks, little horns, pastel wings, lavender cloak, star wand, and crossbody satchel. The construction below is a newly drafted miniature interpretation: its hidden construction and stitch counts cannot be recovered from a photograph.

A tiny mint dragon wizard with a lilac pointed hat, folded wings, star wand, and miniature satchel.

Materials

Materials

  • Light DK cotton/cotton-blend yarn: mint green 12 g, cream 5 g, lavender 8 g, pale pink 3 g, lemon yellow 2 g, cocoa brown 3 g; estimates, not measured consumption
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook; stitch marker; yarn needle; scissors; fine pins
  • A small amount of polyester stuffing; black and dark-brown embroidery thread; pink embroidery thread for cheeks
  • Optional two 5 mm locking craft eyes only for an adult-display ornament; embroidered eyes are preferable where small parts are a concern

Use smooth yarn for legible miniature stitches. Chunky plush chenille like the visual reference makes a larger object; do not expect the same size when swapping yarn weights.

Before You Begin

Draft and image note:

This is an original, untested design draft, not a reconstruction of a maker’s hidden pattern. Target gauge and yarn usage are estimates; check them on your own sample. All generated photographs are illustrative and may simplify or differ in fine stitch mechanics.

Work spiral rounds without joining or turning; place a marker in the first stitch of each round. Turn only when a flat piece explicitly says to turn. Do not count initial chains as stitches. The target firm gauge is approximately 7 sc across and 7 spiral rounds per 2 cm (0.8 in) on a stuffed practice tube, measured without stretching. At 30 stitches, head circumference should be about 8.6 cm, or diameter roughly 2.7 cm before stuffing changes the outline. If fabric shows stuffing, use a smaller hook; if it is rigid and pinched, loosen tension. Compare actual measurements before committing to all the decorative pieces.

Small eyes, star ornaments, shoulder straps, and a wand pose risks of choking or entanglement. This ornament is not designed or certified as a baby toy. For children, omit detachable accessories and use embroidered facial details; supervise and assess each part independently.

Complete Crochet Pattern

Step 1 — Head and face (make 1)

With mint yarn, crochet in a continuous spiral. Keep the beginning of the round at the center back; flatten the face toward the front before deciding eye placement.

R16 sc in MR.(6 sts)
R2Inc in each st around.(12 sts)
R3[Sc 1, inc] 6 times.(18 sts)
R4[Sc 2, inc] 6 times.(24 sts)
R5[Sc 3, inc] 6 times.(30 sts)
R6–R10Sc around for 5 rounds.(30 sts each round)
R11[Sc 3, dec] 6 times.(24 sts)
R12[Sc 2, dec] 6 times.(18 sts)
R13[Sc 1, dec] 6 times. Stuff firmly but not stiffly.(12 sts)
R14Dec 6 times; FO and close opening with needle.(6 sts)

For the cream snout: ch 5, sc in second ch from hook and in next 2 ch; 3 sc in last ch. Work back along opposite side: sc in next 2 ch, 2 sc in final ch (10 sts in the oval round). Sl st to close. Sew the oval horizontally between head R8–R11. Add two short dark nostril stitches. Embroider two black oval eyes centered near R7–R8 about 8 stitches apart, and tiny pink cheek patches just below their outer edges. If using craft eyes, insert and lock them before stuffing and closing R13.

Baby Dragon Crochet 🐉 | Magical Dragon Amigurumi crochet tutorial step 2

Step 1 (top-left): Hold the mint head fabric with one live loop ready. Step 2 (top-middle): Insert the hook into the next stitch under both top loops. Step 3 (top-right): Bring the working yarn over the hook. Step 4 (bottom-left): Draw up a loop so two loops are on the hook. Step 5 (bottom-middle): Yarn over again while keeping both loops on the hook. Step 6 (bottom-right): Draw yarn through both loops to complete the single crochet.

Step 2 — Body, belly, and tiny limbs

Body, mint: R1 6 sc in MR (6); R2 inc around (12); R3 [sc 1, inc] x6 (18); R4 [sc 2, inc] x6 (24); R5–R8 sc around (24 each); R9 [sc 2, dec] x6 (18); R10 [sc 1, dec] x6 (12). Stuff, FO leaving a long tail, and sew the 12-stitch opening to the base of the head in a level circle.

Cream belly panel: ch 5; rows 1–5, sc in second ch and remaining 3 ch or stitches (4 sts per row), ch 1 and turn between rows. FO and sew vertically centered on front of body, with lower end toward R3 and top toward R8. Avoid stretching the panel; it should be a slim oval-ish rectangle once shaped by sewing.

Arms, make 2 mint: R1 6 sc in MR (6); R2–R3 sc around (6 each). Lightly stuff or leave flat, FO with tail. Legs, make 2 mint: R1 6 sc in MR (6); R2 [sc 1, inc] x3 (9); R3–R4 sc around (9 each); FO with tail. Stitch a tiny cream semicircle on each toe with three short satin stitches, rather than enlarging the feet. Attach legs to lower sides R2–R4, arms beside upper body R7–R9.

Step 3 — Horns, ears, and wings

Cream horns, make 2: R1 3 sc in MR (3); R2 sc around (3); R3 [sc 1, inc, sc 1] (4); R4 sc around (4); FO. Sew upright on upper head R3–R5, spaced evenly either side of the center line. For mint ears, make 2: ch 4, sc in second ch, hdc is not used here—sc in next ch and 3 sc in last ch; along opposite side, sc in next 2 chains (7 total). FO. Pin each tapered oval sideways below the horns and secure at the short base only.

Pink wings, make 2: ch 2; row 1 sc in second ch (1), ch 1 turn; row 2 inc (2), ch 1 turn; row 3 inc, sc 1 (3), ch 1 turn; row 4 inc, sc 2 (4), ch 1 turn; row 5 inc, sc 3 (5), ch 1 turn; row 6 sc 5 (5), FO. With mint, sc evenly along the long sloping edge, spacing approximately 6 sc (this edging is decorative, not a counted foundation round). Work a mirror-image second wing by flipping it during assembly. Sew each short vertical edge to upper back R7–R9, leaving broad tips free; avoid sewing the wing onto the face.

Baby Dragon Crochet 🐉 | Magical Dragon Amigurumi crochet tutorial step 3

Step 1 (top-left): Check the closed mint head and position the cream snout below the eyes. Step 2 (top-middle): Arrange two cream horns and two mint ears before sewing. Step 3 (top-right): Pair the pink wings with contrasting edging, with tips facing outward. Step 4 (bottom-left): Check the lavender pointed hat shape and lower brim. Step 5 (bottom-middle): Secure the head to the center of the stuffed body with a yarn needle. Step 6 (bottom-right): Position the cape and satchel after the upper body and wings are assembled. These are illustrative assembly milestones, not tested stitch-count photographs.

Step 4 — Wizard hat and lavender cape

Hat cone: with lavender, R1 4 sc in MR (4); R2–R3 sc around (4 each); R4 [sc 1, inc] x2 (6); R5 sc around (6); R6 [sc 1, inc] x3 (9); R7 sc around (9); R8 [sc 2, inc] x3 (12); R9 sc around (12); R10 [sc 1, inc] x6 (18); R11 [sc 2, inc] x6 (24); R12 [sc 3, inc] x6 (30); R13 sc around (30); R14 [sc 4, inc] x6 (36); R15 sc around (36). FO. Shape the first three rounds into a gentle sideways curl, securing the tip discreetly with one or two stitches. For brim, join yarn to any R15 stitch; work [sc 5, inc] x6 (42); next round sc 42; FO. This brim is part of the same hat; it is not a separate ring. Test-fit over the horns before attaching with a few removable sewing stitches at the back.

Cape: lavender ch 13; row 1 sc in second ch from hook and across (12), ch 1 turn; row 2 inc, sc 10, inc (14), ch 1 turn; row 3 inc, sc 12, inc (16), ch 1 turn; row 4 sc 16 (16), ch 1 turn; row 5 inc, sc 14, inc (18), FO. Create a second identical panel only if you want a fuller cloak; the base design uses one. Place row 1 around shoulders as a back cape with the widest row toward the tail. Two short lavender ties stitched at the upper corners (ch 7 each, FO) can be sewn under the chin; avoid a tight closed neck loop.

Step 5 — Star wand, satchel, and celestial details

Wand shaft: in cocoa, ch 9, sl st in second ch and each remaining chain (8 sl sts); FO. For a five-point yellow star, MR: [ch 3, sl st in second ch, sc in third ch, sl st into MR] five times, then pull ring closed. Sew star to one wand end and reinforce shaft by stitching it flat to the dragon's front paw. Do not insert wire. Make two more stars the same way to decorate the hat and bag. For a crescent on the hat, ch 7 yellow, sc in second ch and next, 2 sc in next, sc next 2, 3 sc in last (8 worked stitches); FO and curve into a crescent when stitching.

Satchel: cocoa ch 6; row 1 sc in second ch and across (5), ch 1 turn; rows 2–4 sc 5, ch 1 turn after rows 2 and 3; FO after row 4. Fold bottom 2 rows upward; sew both side seams, leaving the top flap loose. Make a strap ch 22, sl st back along all 21 chains, FO; sew strap ends at opposite top corners of bag. Position across shoulder to hip; tack to body so it cannot slide. Sew a small yellow star to flap.

Size and assembly checkpoint

Without its hat, the dragon should be approximately 5–6 cm tall. The hat adds roughly 2–3 cm. Compare head width, body height and brim circumference against your own gauge; if the brim is too tight, repeat the 42-stitch round without extra increases rather than forcing it over the horns.

Assembly and Finishing

Pin parts before permanently sewing: horns and ears should remain visible under the hat; wings should emerge symmetrically from the back, not the arms. Center the head over the body opening and use small whipstitches through corresponding fabric loops. Weave every tail inside a stuffed piece wherever possible. Sew the cloak at the upper back below the head, then place the hat, wand and satchel. Finally add a tiny lavender forehead spike by working ch 4 and sl st back in the next 3 chains; stitch it between the eyes and hat edge. Trim yarn fuzz carefully and gently shape the hat curl with fingers. No wire, glue, or stiffener is required for the base design.

Customization Ideas

🎨
Midnight wizard
Swap lavender for navy and yellow for pale silver. Keep the same stitch counts and yarn thickness.
🧵
Soft embroidered face
Use satin stitches for both eyes and cheeks instead of bead-like plastic eyes; check how the stitches sit before stuffing.
⭐
Travel-light dragon
Leave off the bag and wand while keeping horns, wings, and cloak; hide unused tacking points under the arms.
✨
Longer cloak
Add two more 18-sc rows to the cape after row 5. This changes only cloak length, not body construction.

Troubleshooting

⚠️
Problem

Stuffing peeks through the head

Possible cause: Loose sc gauge or overstuffing

✓
How to fix
Try 0.25 mm smaller hook and keep the head softly rounded; check a 30-stitch test circumference before restitching.
⚠️
Problem

Hat hides the horns or eyes

Possible cause: Brim pulled too low or cone seated unevenly

✓
How to fix
Lift the brim by one head round and tack only at the back; keep both cream horn tips uncovered.
⚠️
Problem

Wings point in different directions

Possible cause: Both flat pieces attached without mirroring

✓
How to fix
Flip one wing before pinning and match the short sewn bases at equal heights on opposite sides.
⚠️
Problem

Miniature bag bulges

Possible cause: Seams too bulky or strap too short

✓
How to fix
Use a single strand for seam sewing and lengthen the chain strap in two-chain increments until it lies flat.

Care Instructions

🫧

Cleaning

Follow the yarn label; for a mixed-fiber display piece, dab stains with cool water and gentle detergent rather than agitating the small sewn embellishments.
💨

Drying and shaping

Blot with a clean towel, reshape wings and curled hat by hand, and air dry completely. Avoid heat that might affect stuffing or decorative parts.
✨

Storage

Store dry, away from crushing pressure and direct sun. Recheck wand, stars, straps, and eyes periodically for loose stitching.

Questions You Might Have

Conclusion

Take a moment to adjust the floppy hat, flare the wings evenly, and straighten the little satchel. Your finished mint dragon should look curious and magical, with a compact body that keeps the costume details readable. Consider making a matching dragon in a second color once the first sample's gauge and fit are confirmed.
